Cyclones named after corrupt politicians and government employees
In the wake of the scandal involving billions of pesos in pork barrel funds, an online petition is now in the works to ask the state weather bureau to name cyclones after corrupt politicians.
The petition on Change.org seeks to ask the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration to name cyclones “after corrupt politicians and grafters.”
The devastation they cause is so great… Mother Nature can’t even compete with them for the destruction of life and property,” said Ismael Tomelden of Marikina, who started the petition.
He added the petition aims to be “a constant reminder of how our hard-earned money has been stolen or misspent by corrupt politicians.”
As of Wednesday morning, the petition had gathered more than 1,000 signatures, on its way to its goal of getting 1,500 signatures.
Once completed, the petition would be sent to Pagasa.
Presently, Pagasa uses four lists of names for tropical cyclones, on a rotation basis. Each list is used once every four years – for example, the list used in 2013 will be used again in 2017 and 2021. (JK/Sunnex)
